C.D. Hockersmith Wins 2004 Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational; Cardinals Finish Third Overall

Sophomore C.D. Hockersmith fired a final-round 71 to erase a two-stroke deficit and win the 2004 Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Delaware Country Club.

"I am really excited," Hockersmith said. "To win my first collegiate tournament at home and at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational is special. I putted the ball really well, which was the major reason why I played good."

The individual medalist honor is the first in Hockersmith's collegiate career and the first individual honor for a Ball State golfer since Kenny Cook captured medalist honors in 2003.

"I am very excited for C.D. and his first collegiate win," says BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "He deserves this victory because he continues to work hard and challenge himself to be the best he can be. With tough conditions today at Delaware, he was able to carry over his play from Monday."

Notre Dame captured the team total with a three-round score of 855, while Miami University finished second at 864. The Cardinals placed third with a total of 868, Northern Illinois was fourth at 871 and Eastern Michigan finished fifth at 880.

"As a team, we continue to struggle putting together three solid tournament rounds," Fleck says. " At the same time, I am excited about this team and our potential because I really feel we have some strong players."

Brandon Boomsma tied for 20th overall with a total of 221 (73-72-76), Patrick Wilkes-Krier (73-78-71=222) and Wayne Denger (71-72-79=224) each tied for 24th and Bud Graessle tied for 41st (75-73-76=224).

Lance Scholl paced the Ball State "B" team to tie for 34th at 223 (78-73-72), while Andy Skillman tied for 63rd at 230 (72-75-83).

The Cardinals complete their 2004 fall campaign next Monday at Tuesday at the Xavier Invitational.
