John Amos earned three letters for head coach Bill Richards as a member of the Ball State University men’s tennis team from 1991-94.
Amos was one of only three student-athletes in school history to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and the first Ball State tennis player to earn Academic All-America First-Team honors. Amos graduated with a 3.886 grade-point average as a criminal justice major.
He was the first singles player in Ball State history to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championships, and completed his career with an 83-26 singles record, including a 16-0 mark against Mid-American Conference opponents. Amos was a member of three MAC Championship teams and won five individual conference titles in his career. He was the league champion in No. 2 singles as a junior and at No. 5 singles as a sophomore. Amos teamed with Denny English to win the No. 1 MAC doubles championship as a senior plus teamed with Curt Josselyn to win the No. 1 doubles title as a junior. Amos teamed with Pierre Dommestrup to win the No. 3 MAC doubles crown as a sophomore.
Amos was ranked 35th in the nation in singles in the final poll as a senior, and was ranked as high as 18th during the 1993-94 season.
Amos received his bachelor’s degree from Ball State in 1994, and a law degree from West Virginia University in 1999. He is currently the assistant prosecutor for Montgomery County in Ohio. He was inducted into the city of Dayton’s Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002
