Field Hockey Falls to Bucknell in Gritty Season Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Ball State field hockey team officially launched its 2026 season with a resilient defensive performance on Friday, falling 1-0 to the Bucknell Bison at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.
The Cardinals showcased intense defensive pressure throughout the match, executing an aggressive game plan that limited Bucknell's scoring opportunities. Ball State's structured positioning and physical presence forced turnovers at critical junctions, disrupting the Bison's forward line and allowing the midfield to transition fluidly into counter-attacks.
When Bucknell managed to generate a penalty corner, the Cardinals' defensive unit shifted seamlessly, rushing the shooters and clearing the ball out of danger with authority.
Following a scoreless first half, Bucknell finally broke through in the third period when Juliana Serafin scored what proved to be the lone goal of the contest.
Ball State answered with a aggressive counter-attack of its own. Veteran Julia Verratti led the offensive charge with five total shots on goal, including three late attempts inside the circle as the Cardinals desperately tried to force overtime, but they were unable to find the equalizer.
Goalkeeper Carleigh Hofelich delivered a stellar performance in the cage for the Cardinals, registering seven saves while anchoring a defense that faced 13 total shots and six penalty corners.
Ball State continues its weekend road trip in Lewisburg, Pa., on Saturday, when the Cardinals face Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. ET at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.
