Ryan Patterson enters his ninth season with the Cardinals. He began his coaching career at his high school alma mater of Claymont while finishing his undergraduate degree. In 1999, he made the move to the college ranks at Hiram College. His first Division I experience began at Kent State with the men’s basketball program in 2000. He helped the Golden Flashes to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2001 & 2002), which included advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2002 along with a No. 12 national ranking. Amongst members of that team, was future NFL Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates of the Chargers.
Patterson transitioned to women’s basketball in 2002 while he coached for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at West Liberty State University from 2002-2004. In 2004, Patterson began coaching women’s basketball full time at the University of Findlay as the Associate Head Coach from 2004 to 2011 before going back to Kent State for a season. In 2012, he then took his current position at Ball State.
In eight seasons at Ball State Patterson has been part of six straight postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournaments, a Final 16 appearance at the WNIT (2013), a Mid-American Conference West Division title (2014), seven Mid-American Conference Tournament appearances and three straight 20+ win seasons. He helped guide Ball State to an 11-0 non-conference start in 2017, which marks the best start in program history and the second-largest win streak in program history. Patterson has also played an integral roll in wins over Power 5 programs, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Iowa and Minnesota. In 2019-20, Patterson helped guide the Cardinals to an 21-10 overall record with 13 more wins than the Cardinals had in 2018-19. Ball State wrapped up the 2018-19 season with an overall 8-23 ledger. The 13-game turnaround leads all NCAA Division I women's basketball programs and ranks 30th all-time in NCAA history. The Cardinals ended the 2019-20 campaign ranked 10th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (30.2), 11th in free throws attempts (655) and 49th in both field goal percentage defense (36.8) and 3-point defense (28.8). Ball State went 13-4 this season in two-possession games, posted a 5-3 mark in one-possession contests and was 2-1 in overtime games.
Alongside Sallee, Patterson has helped coach some of the most prestigious players including Ball State’s all-time leading scorer, Nathalie Fontaine and all-time assists leader Carmen Grande.
Patterson earned his bachelors at Malone College in 1999 and a master degree from Kent State in 2002.
