Freed’s Walk-Off Home Run Gives Ball State a Sweep Over NIU
April 29, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Senior Seth Freed led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run down the right field line to lift the Ball State baseball team to a 5-4 victory over Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
This was Freed's second walk-off home run of the season as he did the same in a 13-12 win over Miami (Ohio) on April 13.
Ball State (22-20, 10-8 MAC) held a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth inning only to see Northern Illinois (15-28, 5-13) put together a two-out rally to even the score. Three consecutive walks pushed in a run to make the score, 4-2. Brad Wood then ripped a full-count pitch to the gap in right center field that easily scored two runs. Samuel Vega, who was running on the pitch from first base, also tried to score on the hit, but senior right fielder Jeff Riedel threw a perfect strike to junior catcher Chase Sebby to get the third out at home.
Freed quickly put an end to the game in the bottom of the frame by lining a full-count pitch well over the right field fence for his team leading seventh home run.
RBIs from junior William Baker, senior Colin Brockhouse and Riedel gave the Cardinals a 3-1 cushion after four innings. Sebby added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a RBI triple to the left center field gap.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Nicolas worked the first five innings and limited NIU to one run on four hits. Reliever T.J. Baker did not allow a hit in his three innings of work.
Riedel, Sebby and Brockhouse all had multiple hits for Ball State. For Northern Illinois, Wood went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.
This was Ball State's first conference series sweep in 2018.
The Cardinals conclude their home stand Wednesday, May 2, when Big Ten foe Ohio State visits Muncie for the first time since 1970.
