CLEVELAND, Ohio - Junior guards Carmen Grande and Jasmin Samz have been named to the 2017-18 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office announced today.
This is the second straight season Grande has earned Academic All-MAC honors as she owns a 3.98 grade point average in mathematical science. Grande was tabbed to the 2017-18 College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-American First Team. She became only the second player in program history to earn the award and the first since Kate Endress in 2004-05. Grande ended this season ranked second nationally in assists per game (9.2) and third in total assists (294). She ended the season third on the team in scoring (11.5), first in assists (9.2) and first in steals (2.6). She scored a career-high 25 points this season in a win against Eastern Michigan Feb. 7, and was featured on the Top 10 Plays on ESPN's SportsCenter. Grande has 13 career double-doubles and 23 games with double-figure assists.
Samz, an exercise science major, owns a 3.360 GPA. This is the first time she has earned the honor. Samz ended the season third on the team in scoring (11.5) and first in 3-point field goal percentage (40 percent). She scored in double figures 21 times for the Cardinals this year. Samz registered a career-high 21 points in a win March 3 at Eastern Michigan.
This season, both Grande and Samz helped the Cardinals to a perfect 11-0 non-conference start with wins over Purdue, Vanderbilt, Butler and Western Kentucky. The Cardinals ended their season 25-7 and advanced to the second round of the postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) before falling to Purdue 77-72 at home March 18.
