Cardinals Take Rubber Game Over Kent State, 7-2
March 25, 2018 | Baseball
KENT, Ohio – The Ball State Cardinals rallied with seven unanswered runs to take Sunday's series finale over host Kent State, 7-2. The Cardinals earned a series win at Kent State for the first time since 2008.
Several Ball State (12-11, 2-1 MAC) players played a key role in the victory. Junior John Ricotta hit his first home run as a Cardinal, a two-run shot, to even the score at 2-all in the fifth inning. Senior Seth Freed gave Ball State its first lead with a two-out RBI single to center field in the seventh inning. Fellow senior Justin Kirkpatrick broke open the game with a bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning.
On the mound, junior reliever Nick Floyd held Kent State (11-8, 1-2) to just one single over the final five innings to earn his second win. The righty retired 11 consecutive Golden Flashes during one stretch and also got Kent State to hit into two double plays.
Sophomore Noah Powell had two more hits today and led the Cardinals at the plate this weekend with a .462 batting average (6-of-13). Meanwhile, junior catcher Chase Sebby reached base four times in Sunday's game and scored twice.
Brad Hamilton was the lone bright spot for the MAC preseason favorite Golden Flashes. The first baseman went 3-for-4 and tallied both of Kent State's RBIs.
Next up for Ball State is a road trip to Valparaiso on Tuesday, March 27. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET.
