Men’s Volleyball Ends Spring Break Trip with 3-0 Loss to UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The 10th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team took in UC Santa Barbara Saturday night in the closing match of their Spring Break road trip. The Cardinals were taken down by the 14th ranked Gauchos, 3-0 (13-25, 17-25, 19-25).
Ball State struggled in the match, only knocking down 26 kills for a .071 hitting percentage. The Cardinals finished the night with 30 digs and 6.0 total team blocks. Matt Szews led the team in kills with seven. David Siebum added six kills while Ryan Dorgan and Mitch Weiler each notched two. Courtland Scharenborg led the team in assists and digs on the night. Scharenborg tallied 17 of Ball State's 25 assists along with six digs.
Ball State scored the first point in the opening set, but had a tough time keeping up as the set continued. UC Santa Barbara forced a Cardinal timeout after pushing the lead to 13-7. The Gauchos went on to score five straight points following the timeout and eventually took the set, 25-13. Szews had four of the team's eight kills with two added by Matt Walsh and one by Ben Chinnici. Jake Romano had eight assists and two digs. Blake Reardon and Szews also had two digs in the set.
In the second set, the Gauchos scored the first three points. They continued momentum from set number one and won the second set, 25-17. Siebum had five kills for a .444 hitting percentage in the set. Szews added three kills along with two knocked down by both Weiler and Dorgan.
Set number three saw eight tied scores and two lead changes before UC Santa Barbara took the victory, 25-19. The Cardinals only had six kills for a negative hitting percentage in the set while the Gauchos had 10 kills for a .231 hitting percentage. Anthony Lebryk had two kills on two attempts in the set. He also had the lone Cardinal solo block in the set. Reardon, Weiler, Dorgan and Siebum had one kills apiece. Scharenborg led the set in digs with five with four more added by Dorgan.
This marks the second straight loss for the Cardinals. The team went 2-2 during their Spring Break trip and will return home to continue MIVA action. Ball State will look to bounce back into the win column with a trip to Fort Wayne on Wednesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. The Mastodons will then come to Muncie on Saturday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m.
