Brown & Grande’s Career Highs Help Lift WBB Past EMU

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's basketball team held on to defeat Eastern Michigan, 91-85, Wednesday night in Worthen Arena. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 19-4 on the season and 8-4 in Mid-American Conference action while the Eagles fell to 9-13 on the year and 5-6 in league play.
Junior guard Carmen Grande led the Cardinals in scoring with a career high 25 points. She went 10-of-13 from the free throw line and dished out eight assists. Freshman forward Oshlynn Brown also had personal best performance after scoring 22 points. Brown also registered her third straight double-double after leading the Cardinals defensively with 13 rebounds. Both senior forward Moriah Monaco and junior guard Jasmin Samz each added 15 points to the win.
After a layup by the Eagles Corrione Cardwell to open scoring for the game, EMU jumped out to an early 14-9 lead. The Cardinals battled back, though, with a 9-0 run to take an 18-14 edge over the Eagles at the 3:24 mark. During the run, Brown scored eight points and pulled down two rebounds. However, Eastern Michigan came back to tie the game for the third time before baskets from Brown, senior guard Frannie Frazier, Samz and Monaco allowed Ball State to take a 29-24 advantage heading into the second stanza.
The second quarter continued to be tight affair. Brown knocked down two from the charity stripe with 4:02 remaining in the frame to tie game, but Eastern Michigan closed the half with a 10-5 scoring spree, which mostly came off of baskets from Courtnie Lewis and Lorraine Enabulele. Eastern Michigan was able to push its lead to five by the end of the second quarter. At the half, Brown led the Cardinals with 16 points off of 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
Still trailing, Grande drove the lane and made a layup, she then stole the ball allowing Samz to score on an inbound pass which gave Ball State back a 54-51 advantage with 6:23 left in the third. After that, the Cardinals controlled the game eventually pushing their lead to 10 (67-57) with under a minute to play in the third stanza. Grande netted 10 points and four assists in the quarter. Ball State also turned up the defense holding Eastern Michigan to only 11 points.
It was a battle but the Cardinals continued to fight in the final frame. Ball State had an 11 point lead over Eastern Michigan with 2:31 left in the game but Eastern Michigan fought back to come within two (87-85) with 13 seconds on the clock. EMU was forced to send Ball State to the line in its last efforts to win the contest. Grande answered going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the closing seconds to seal the victory for the Cardinals.
