Men’s Volleyball Falls in Four to MIVA Foe McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. – The Ball State men's volleyball team suffered its second straight loss Saturday night after falling 3-1 to McKendree. This marks just the third time the Cardinals have fallen to the Bearcats in the series history.
Ball State tallied 48 kills for only a .149 hitting percentage on the day. The Cardinals also had 45 assists, 43 digs, 10 block assists and six service aces. McKendree proved to be tough defensively, posting 53 digs, one solo block and 25 block assists.
Blake Reardon led the team in kills with 13. Reardon also had two service aces, three digs and three block assists. Mitch Weiler added nine kills and eight digs while Ben Chinnici and Matt Szews each had eight kills. Anthony Lebryk, along with Reardon, led the team with three block assists. Jake Romano had 26 assists along with a team-high nine digs in the contest.
The Cardinals started off the night with a set one victory (25-19). Szews led the way for Ball State with five of the team's 14 kills. Reardon added four while Matt Walsh had three. Romano had a set-high eight digs in the opening set.
McKendree came back in the second set to even the score, winning the set 25-21. Weiler had four kills and hit for .500 in the set. Weiler also had one service ace and two digs. The set saw 15 tied scored and seven lead changes before a Bearcat kill secured the set.
Ball State was down by as many as seven in the third set before clawing their way back. After a Cardinal timeout with the score of 20-13, the Cardinals were able to go on a 6-0 run. Ball State eventually evened the score 23-23, but we unable to ever regain the lead. The Bearcats took the set 26-24 on a Ball State attack error. Chinnici led the way with seven kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Reardon had four kills with Weiler adding three. Courtland Scharenborg had 10 of Ball State's 13 assists in the set.
The momentum continued for the Bearcats in set four as they were able to hold Ball State to a negative hitting percentage. Reardon had three kills and Walsh had two in the fourth set. Parker Swartz had two block assists with one apiece from Chinnici and Reardon. None of that was enough to force a deciding set five. McKendree took set four with a score of 25-17 and took the match, 3-1.
The Ball State men's volleyball team now has an overall record of 5-7 and fall to 0-2 in MIVA play. The Cardinals will return home after their six match road trip on Friday, Feb. 16 against Lewis. Ball State will then take on Loyola-Chicago Saturday, Feb. 17 in Worthen Arena.
