Freshman Ben Chinnici Leads Cardinals to Season Opener Win

MUNCIE, Ind. – The 14th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team started the 2018 season with a big 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-10) victory over Lees-McRae Friday evening.
The Cardinals were led by freshman outside attacker Ben Chinnici. The newcomer tallied a team high 16 kills for a .609 hitting percentage in his college debut. Chinnici also added seven digs, one assist and one block assist. Senior Matt Walsh racked up 14 kills and six block assists. Junior transfer David Siebum had eight kills while Mitch Weiler added five. Setter Courtland Scharenborg tallied 35 assists in the contest.
In the opening set, the Cardinals posted a .406 hitting percentage compared to Lees-McRae's .241 hitting percentage. Chinnci marked five kills and a .714 hitting percentage. Walsh also had five kills, including the set winning point. Ball State took the set, 25-19.
The set two win (25-16) was highlighted once again by the power of Ball State, tallying 15 kills. The Cardinals added eight digs and 14 block assists in the second set. Chinnici and Walsh each recorded five kills again in set two. Siebum added four kills while Anthony Lebryk added one.
Ball State started set three with six straight points with three Walsh kills, two Weiler kills and a Bobcat error. The Cardinals boasted an impressive .696 hitting percentage and 17 kills. The match ended with a set three 25-10 victory.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will be home again tomorrow Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals will be taking on Emmanuel College.
