Track & Field Earns Pair of Event Wins at Fred Wilt Open

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Led by event wins in the 60m hurdles and 800m run, the Ball State indoor track & field team tallied 10 top five finishes Saturday afternoon at the Fred Wilt Open hosted by Purdue at Lambert Field House.

Junior Jazmin Smith continued to impress in the 60m hurdles, turning in a finals time of 8.52 to win the event by 0.05. Already a MAC Championship automatic qualifier, her time currently stands as the fourth-fastest in the league this season.
Â
Sophomore Brooke Talhelm added a strong race of her own, winning the 800m run in 2:16.90. The effort was nearly two seconds faster than the remainder of the field.

Junior Peyton Stewart also improved her MAC Championship automatic qualifying time in the 60m dash, taking third in the finals with a time of 7.60.

Freshman Hailley Peters led a strong effort in the field events for the Cardinals, placing second in the high jump by clearing 1.59m (5'-2.5").

Senior Adrienne Mayfield added a career-best and third-place distance of 16.58m (54'-4.75") in the weight throw, while sophomore Kelsey Walters launched a fourth-place and career-best throw of 14.13m (46'-4.25") in the shot put. Walters' effort in the shot put is also the third-best individual mark in the indoor shot put in program history.

Overall, Ball State's student-athletes finished the meet with two event wins, 10 top five finishes and 15 career best performances.

Next up for the Cardinals will be the Akron Invitational which runs Feb. 2-3 at the Stile Athletics Field House.
