MUNCIE, Ind. – The No. 14 Ball State men's volleyball team have a huge weekend ahead as they welcome sixth ranked BYU and Stanford into Worthen Arena. The Cardinals will look to take down the Cougars on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 is when the Stanford Cardinal will take the court in Muncie.
Scouting BYU:
BYU is coming into this weekend with a 1-1 record. The Cougars fell to Loyola-Chicago in their first match of the season, 3-2. BYU then picked up a 3-1 win against Lewis. The Cougars started the season ranked third in the preseason poll, but fell to the sixth place spot this week.
The last time Ball State and BYU met was back in 2015 where the Cardinals fell 3-0, (25-23, 25-23, 25-19). BYU leads the series, 14-3.
Scouting Stanford:
The Stanford Cardinal come into Worthen after falling out of the top 15. The Stanford squad was eighth in the preseason poll, but fell to Saint Francis (3-1), Princeton (3-2), and UC Santa Barbara (3-0). The Cardinal will take on Ohio State prior to coming to Muncie.
Stanford last came to Muncie in on Jan. 8 2016, where Ball State fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-18). The Stanford Cardinal leads the all-time series, 7-1.
Cardinal Facts:
Courtland Scharenborg has already placed his name is history with 89 career assists. That number places him in the 16th spot in the record books (during rally scoring era). Scharenborg is also ranked second in the MIVA with 10.67 assists per set.
Freshman Ryan Dorgan marked his first career kill in last week's victory over Emmanuel. He also had one service ace, one dig and one block assist.
Jake Romano had three back-to-back-to-back services aces in Saturday's sweep along with 10 assists and one dig.
In his first weekend in a Ball State jersey, David Siebum had 11 kills for a .588 hitting percentage. He also had three digs and six block assists. Siebum is currently first in the MIVA in blocks per set (2.00) and second in hitting percentage (.588).
Ben Chinnici picked up his first MIVA Offensive Player of the Week honor this week and is currently ranked in three categories in the conference. Chinnici sits at second in kills per set with 4.67 and third in hitting percentage (.533). His 28 kills in the opening weekend put him fourth in the MIVA.
In the record books:
Senior Matt Walsh knocked down 20 kills for a .515 hitting percentage in the opening weekend. He added 10 block assists in the six sets of play, averaging 1.67 blocks per set. Walsh's name can be found all over the Ball State record books, including six top ten spots. He sits in the second place spot in career block assists (during rally scoring era) with 346. He has totaled 381 career blocks, which places him third in Ball State history (during rally scoring era). Walsh is sixth in school history in two categories, career attack percentage (.408) and career blocks per set (1.24). He has tallied 63 career services aces, placing him ninth in the record books. He also sits in the ninth spot in career solo blocks (35). Outside of the top ten, Walsh is 12th in career aces per set with .20, 13th in career points with 825 and 18th in career kills with 554.
Sophomore Matt Szews got off to a solid start last weekend, tallying 13 kills and averaging 4.33 kills per set. He also knocked down six block assists and one solo block. Szews has also etched his name into the record books. He is third in career kills per set with 3.39 and third in career points per set with 4.12. Szews has also tallied 1.57 career digs per set, placing him in the 16th spot.
Senior Mitch Weiler had nine kills, 1.80 kills per set, and a .400 hitting percentage against Lees-McRae and Emmanuel. He starts the season ranked 15th in school history (during rally scoring era) in career digs with 355.
