Cardinals finish strong on day one, record 18 birdies as a team
DALLAS -- Michael VanDeventer and Johnny Watts carded even-par rounds of 71 Sunday to pace the Ball State men's golf team among a strong national field at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
The Cardinals were solid across the board on the opening day of the event. The team also counted rounds of 72 from Timothy Wiseman and 74 from Michael Makris. Jack Cunningham's 76 was the non-counting score, and the freshman was under par with the exception of two holes.
Ball State's team score of 288 (+4) for the day was good enough for ninth among the field of 13 teams at Trinity Forest Golf Club, the future home of the PGA Tour's AT&T Byron Nelson.
Florida (-9) grabbed the round-one lead, while Texas (-8) and Auburn (-6) are right there. The tournament features eight top-25 teams from a year ago and six that reached the 2017 NCAA Nationals.
All-American and 2017 U.S. Open low amateur Scottie Scheffler of Texas leads the way individually after a round of 65 (-6). He will take a two-shot lead over four players into Monday's second round.
Watts birdied three holes in a four-hole stretch to move under par late on his second nine before closing with a bogey, while VanDeventer birdied his final hole to get back to level for the day. That duo is tied for 23rd place among the 78 golfers competing, while Wiseman is tied for 33rd.
The Cardinals closed well as a team with their five counters combining to play their final five holes at 5 under par. BSU's 18 birdies as a team were just one off the highest total of the day.
Ball State will be grouped with Texas Tech and Clemson for the second round. The Cardinals will start on the 10th hole Monday with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT (9:30 ET).
