#CardinalCamp17: First Day in Full Pads
August 06, 2017 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – An unseasonably cool Sunday morning that even featured a light rain shower greeted the Ball State football team as the players took to the practice fields in full pads for the first time during camp. Below are some highlights of Sunday's practice plus a look at the week ahead for the Cardinals.
FOCUS ON RED ZONE: A major emphasis for the Cardinals during camp will be play inside the red zone. Sunday's team periods had the offense take on the defense in red zone situations. The first person to find the end zone was freshman running back Caleb Huntley with a nifty 15-yard run. Redshirt freshman fullback Cody Rudy scored on a catch and run later in the period, much to the delight of the offensive sideline. Freshman wide receiver Justin Hall also found the end zone towards the end of the team session.
DEFENSE STRIKES BACK: Right before the conclusion of practice, the defense made some impressive plays in another offense versus defense segment. Senior defensive end Anthony Winbush got the defensive sideline fired up with a stop behind the line of scrimmage. Redshirt freshman linebacker Jaylin Thomas then put the stop to a screen pass before it had a chance to develop. Finally, junior linebacker Damon Singleton made a hustling play to break up a deep pass down the left sideline.
FIRST DAY OFF: Tuesday is the team's first day off from practice. The team will take its 2017 team picture in the morning before heading around town to distribute team posters and schedule cards as part of the annual Paint the Town Red event.
SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE: Ball State will hold its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday morning at Scheumann Stadium. The scrimmage is likely to start around 10 a.m. Later on in the day, the players and coaches will join supporters of the program at the annual Cardinal Varsity Club (CVC) Kick Off Dinner.
