Two Baseball Recruits Earn State Player of the Year Accolades
June 29, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team might have lost several key starters from its 2017 team, but head coach Rich Maloney has put together a very strong recruiting class for the upcoming fall. Prep Baseball Report named two of those recruits – Drey Jameson and Kyle Nicolas – the top players in their respective states.
Jameson, hailing from Greenfield, Indiana, went 6-1 on the mound this past season for Greenfield-Central High. The right-handed pitcher threw two no-hitters and finished with 112 strikeouts and a 0.65 ERA. In his final appearance as a Cougar, Jameson tossed seven no-hit, shutout innings in the regional playoffs against eventual Class 4A state champion Cathedral. He was lifted due to pitch count rules.
Nicolas, another right-handed pitcher, went 8-0 for Jackson High in Massillon, Ohio. In 56 innings pitched, Nicolas notched 78 strikeouts and posted a 0.50 ERA. Nicolas propelled Jackson to the state championship game thanks to throwing 7.0 innings, striking out seven and holding Lakota West to one run in the 5-1 state semifinal victory. The Polar Bears went on to capture the state title with an 8-2 victory over Strongsville.
Prep Baseball Report is viewed as the No. 1 resource for high school baseball in the states the service covers. The PBR scouting staff covers the state at all levels year-round and is constantly in contact with high school coaches, college coaches and pro scouts.
This is the second straight year a Ball State recruit has been named his state's high school player of the year. The Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association awarded pitcher John Baker the state's Mr. Baseball honor following the 2016 season.
Ball State concluded 2017 with a 30-28 overall record and 14-10 mark in the MAC. This was the fifth straight year the Cardinals reached the 30-win plateau.
