June 21, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Two former Ball State baseball players have moved on to the professional ranks. Alex Maloney and Kevin Marnon have both signed with the Birmingham-Bloomsfield Beavers, an independent league team based out of Utica, Michigan, in the United Shore Baseball League.
Maloney made his first appearance with the Beavers on June 18. The third baseman went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Meanwhile, Marnon has been utilized as a relief pitcher four times since joining the squad in early June. The left-handed pitcher has yet to give up a run and has struck out four batters in 4.0 innings pitched.
As members of the Ball State baseball team, Maloney and Marnon helped the Cardinals capture the 2016 Mid-American Conference West Division title. Maloney made 226 career starts at Ball State over the last four years, which is third most in program history. Maloney ranked second on the team in home runs (8) and RBIs (36) this past spring.
Marnon led the team in innings pitched (70.0) and ranked second in appearances (20) as a senior. He earned MAC West Pitcher of the Week honors two times in 2016, including after his performance in the 7-1 win at No. 6 LSU.
Ball State concluded the 2017 season with a 30-28 overall record and 14-10 mark in the MAC. This was the fifth straight year the Cardinals reached the 30-win plateau.
