Stewart & Lewis Head To Lexington for NCAA East Preliminary Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State track & field program will send a pair of student-athletes to Lexington, Ky., this week as sophomores Regan Lewis and Peyton Stewart are set to compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Championships at the University of Kentucky's Outdoor Track & Field Complex.
It marks the first time Ball State has sent a pair of student-athletes to the regional round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships since the 2009 season.

Stewart will be the first up for Ball State, taking the starting line in the 100m dash at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The only Mid-American Conference sprinter to qualify for the 100m dash, Stewart enters the race as the 42nd seed after recording a career-fast time of 11.55 to win the event at the 2017 MAC Outdoor Championships.
The first Ball State sprinter to qualify for NCAA competition the 100m dash since Amber Williams in 2009, Stewart will make her NCAA postseason debut in the first of six preliminary heats Thursday. The top three runners from each heat, along with the next six fastest runners based on time, advance to Friday's quarterfinal round which is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Lewis will make her NCAA postseason debut Friday, when she opens competition in the high jump at 4:30 p.m. She enters the event tied for seventh in the region after successfully clearing the bar at a career-best height of 1.82m to win the MAC Outdoor Championship.
Lewis will be the second Ball State student-athlete to compete in the high jump at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, joining Rebecca Lomax who qualified three times (2011, 2012, 2015). Lewis is set to compete in the first flight of the high jump Friday and will be 10th in the order.
Progression for the high jump begins at 1.64m and increases to 1.69m, 1.74m, 1.79m, 1.82m and then by 3cm for every further height needed. The top 12 overall finishers advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., with a jump off to break ties for the 12th spot if needed.
LaTasha Jenkins is the last Ball State student-athlete to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 100m dash, earning All-America honors in 1999 after placing fifth in the event. Jenkins also won the national title in the 200m dash in 1999.
Bonita Harrington is the last Ball State student-athlete to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the high jump, earning All-America honors in 1984 after tying for fourth in the event.
