Indiana State Uses Long Ball to Defeat Ball State, 8-2
May 16, 2017 | Baseball
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Dane Giesler and Clay Dungan each homered for host Indiana State, helping the Sycamores tally an 8-2 win over the Ball State baseball team Tuesday afternoon at Bob Warn Field.
Giesler's three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning put Indiana State (25-23) ahead for the first time, 3-2. The Sycamores added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings before Dungan notched a three-run long ball of his own to put the game out of reach.
Ball State (28-25) senior Sean Kennedy homered for the second straight game, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning, to give the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead.
The Cards threatened again in the top of the second inning, thanks to back-to-back singles from juniors Colin Brockhouse and Seth Freed to open the frame, but the ensuing three batters were all retired.
Indiana State's pitching held Ball State to three singles the final seven innings. On the flip side, Ball State's pitching allowed a season-high 10 walks. Five of Indiana State's eight runs came from runners who reached base via a walk.
A bright spot in the Ball State batting order was senior Caleb Stayton, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. The first baseman has recorded multiple hits in five straight games and is hitting .524 (11-of-21) in that stretch.
Ball State wraps up the regular season with a trip to Central Michigan this weekend. MAC Tournament seeding is on the line for both teams. Central Michigan currently leads the MAC West and is second in the league standings, but a Ball State sweep can propel the Cardinals to at least a share of the MAC West title. Game one is set for Thursday, May 18 at 3:05 p.m.
