Softball Drops MAC Championship Opener to Kent State
May 10, 2017 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio – Trailing by three with bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth, the Ball State softball team could not produce a clutch hit in a 4-1 loss to Kent State Wednesday morning in Mid-American Conference Championship action at historic Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
With the loss, the fifth-seeded Cardinals (30-27) will play in Thursday's 10:30 a.m. elimination game versus top-seeded Central Michigan who suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 8 Western Michigan Wednesday afternoon.
In Wednesday's loss to the Golden Flashes (28-25), the Cardinals were only able to record one hit, a fifth inning single from freshman right fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) which slipped past a diving KSU second baseman.
In addition to limiting the Cardinals to just one hit and striking out 13, Kent State starting pitcher Ronnie Ladines provided the first run of the game with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the second inning. A two-out triple from Emily Dobbin later in the inning extended KSU's lead to 2-0.
Kent State would add single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to pull ahead 4-0.
The Golden Flashes would open the door for the Cardinals in the top of the sixth, however, as errors on the first three plays helped Ball State load the bases with no outs. Senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville), Ball State's leading hitter, was the first up with bases loaded and was promptly hit by the first pitch to bring in the Cardinals' first run of the game.
Unfortunately, it was Ball State's only run of the game as Ladines took the bat out of the hands of Ball State's leading slugger and struck out the next three batters to keep it a three-run game. She went on to retire the Cardinals in order in the top of the seventh to improve to 16-13 on the year.
Freshman Darcie Huber (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) took the loss in the circle for the Cardinals, allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits over 4.0 innings of work. She also struck out three batters.
Junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) threw the final two innings for Ball State, surrendering just a home run, while striking out two batters.
