Men's Tennis Loses Tough 4-3 Battle At Toledo
April 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State men's tennis team (10-9, 2-2 MAC) suffered a 4-3 loss in a hard fought battle Friday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action at Toledo (10-11, 1-3 MAC). The two conference teams competed to the very end but the Cardinals came up short this time.
The Cardinals got off to a good start after taking the early 1-0 edge over Toledo in doubles action. Lucas Andersen and Andrew Stutz earned a 6-2 victory on the top court over Stejpan Sisko and Omar Espinosa. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Conner Andersen and Tom Carney secured the doubles point after claiming a 6-3 decision over Vince Anzalone and Juan Carranza.
Ball State then quickly extended its lead to 2-0 after Stutz took down Anzalone in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position. Toledo then regained some confidence after Sisko put the Rockets on the board with his defeat over Lucas Andersen, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. Patrick Downs then dropped his match to Reid Teatsorth on court five which then knotted the match for the Rockets.
After that, Nemanja Guzina put the Cardinals back on top when he beat Espinosa, 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth slot of the lineup. But Toledo took the victory on court three which would make it a 3-3 score with one match remaining. For the second straight match the outcome would be on the shoulders of Conner Andersen at the No. 6 position. He earned the Cardinals the victory last Saturday over the Huskies but this time Conner couldn't hang on to the win and would lose, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 to Thawin Suksathaporn.
The Ball State men's tennis team will play a mid-week non-conference match at home Wednesday against IUPUI. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting.
