LIVE SCORING
NASHPORT, Ohio -- The Ball State men's golf team maintained its position Saturday at the Mid-American Conference Championships. The Cardinals never moved out of second place and will enter the final round trailing only Kent State.
Michael VanDeventer led the way Saturday with a 71 (-1) at The Virtues Golf Club. Ball State also counted 73's from Johnny Watts and Timothy Wiseman and a 77 from Michael Makris on the way to a score of 294 (+6) for the day.
The Cardinals ran their 54-hole total to 876 (+12). Defending champion and 12th-ranked Kent State leads the nine-team field at 860 (-4).
Watts, who shared the 36-hole lead, remained in contention for medalist honors. The 2015 MAC champion dropped one shot on the day but is still within striking distance in third place at 5 under par. He has played steady golf throughout, leading the field with 39 pars.
Miami's Patrick Flavin (-9) shot to the top of the leaderboard with a third-round 67, while Kent State's Gisli Sveinbergsson (-7), the other 36-hole leader, is second.
Wiseman remained in ninth place at 3 over for the tournament. The sophomore made five more birdies Saturday. His 14 birdies for the tournament are second only to Flavin's 18.
Makris gives the Cardinals three players among the top 20. He is tied for 16th at 8 over par.
VanDeventer jumped nine spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 28th with his 71. He had only one blemish on his scorecard and made back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to get his round back into red figures.
Saturday's round was delayed four hours by thunderstorms that threatened to wash out the entire day. But the sun came out, the format was adjusted to a shotgun start, and the teams played the majority of the afternoon in near perfect conditions.
For Sunday's final round, Ball State will again play with Kent State and Toledo. The Rockets (+20) are eight shots behind the Cardinals in third place. Miami (+24) and Ohio (+24) are tied for fourth.
The Cardinals' tee times begin Sunday at 9:25 a.m., and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
