Men's Tennis Drops Heartbreaker To Western Michigan, 4-3

The Broncos took the early 1-0 advantage over the Cardinals to start the match after winning the doubles portion. Western Michigan clinched that point on courts two and three. At the No. 3 doubles position, WMU's Jannik Dpitz and Eric Olivarez earned a 6-4 win over the Ball State twosome of Marko Guzina and Patrick Downs. The top court did not finish their match but Lucas Andersen and Andrew Stutz were up 5-4 over Daniel Loebel and Kennosuke Nouchi 5-4. Lucas Andersen and Stutz had defeated the Broncos twosome when they were ranked earlier this conference season in Kalamazoo.
It was only fitting that on senior day Lucas Andersen would earn the first point for the Cardinals on the top court with an exciting 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nouchi. With the match tied 1-1, Nemanja Guzina gave Ball State its first lead of the contest (2-1) after his straight set take down over Daniel Loebel at the No. 4 postion.
But the Broncos quickly knotted the match for the second time at the No. 2 position after Stutz suffered a hard fought three set thriller to Matt Hamilton. With three courts remaining, Downs took the first set from Matej Svjetlicic on court five but then dropped the next two to give Western Michigan the 3-2 edge. The match would come down to Conner Andersen and Marko Guzina. Conner Andersen battled through an impressive three set victory over Eric Olivarez at the No. 6 slot to tie the match 3-3. Marko Guzina unfortunately couldn't snag the third stanza from Maik Steiner dropping the last set 6-4, which would give the Broncos the victory.
The Ball State men's tennis team will play a non-conference double-header against IU Southeast Saturday with a noon first serve at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
