Cardinals look to defend last year’s victory when action begins Friday
LIVE SCORING
The Ball State men's golf team will host the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational as defending champion starting Friday at Delaware Country Club.
The action begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start Friday and the members of the Cardinals' lineup opening on holes one through five. The teams will play 36 holes on the opening day and then conclude the tournament Saturday with tee times for the final round beginning at 8 a.m.
The Cardinals welcome 12 other teams for the event -- Butler, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Fort Wayne, IUPUI, Loyola-Chicago, Northern Kentucky, Taylor, Valparaiso, Wright State and Youngstown State. Individuals from Michigan State will also compete.
Ball State held off Cleveland State to win the EY Memorial by seven strokes last year, while Johnny Watts and Keegan McKinney tied for second on the individual leaderboard. Wright State's Ryan Wenzler topped the Cardinals' duo by one stroke for medalist honors and returns to lead the Raiders this year.
McKinney will miss the tournament this year because of injury, but Watts is back along with three other members of the winning lineup from last year -- Timothy Wiseman, Michael Makris and Michael VanDeventer.
Colin Proctor and Blake Vise will also be part of the lineup for this week's event, which features six players competing for each team and the top five scores in each round counting. Quentyn Carpenter will play for the Cardinals as an individual.
The EY Memorial is one of two tournaments remaining for Ball State before the Mid-American Conference Championships. The Cardinals won last month at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate and are looking to bounce back from a 14th-place finish the last time out against a strong field at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship.
Wiseman led Ball State in both of those events, including a runner-up finish at Pinehurst. With a 73.83 stroke average this year, the sophomore trails only Watts (73.00) for best on the team. Makris (73.87) and VanDeventer (74.0) are also close behind.
About the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational
The tournament, formerly known as the Ball State Invitational, began in the 1974-75 season and returned to the schedule last spring after a one-year hiatus. The event was renamed the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational beginning with the 2001-02 season and the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational beginning in 2013-14.
The tournament is named in honor of former Ball State men's golf coach Earl Yestingsmeier, who passed away in 2014 at age 80. Yestingsmeier spent 36 seasons leading the men's golf program, including 31 in a dual role as sports information director and golf coach.
He guided the Cardinals to 107 tournament titles and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. For his success, he was enshrined in the Ball State Athletics, Golf Coaches Association and Indiana Golf halls of fame. The team's most avid fan, Yestingsmeier continued to travel to nearly every tournament in which Ball State competed until his passing.
