Groundbreaking begins at 5 p.m., followed by reception and men’s volleyball match
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State University will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Friday evening for the Dr. Don Shondell Practice Center, the future practice home of the Cardinals basketball and volleyball programs.
Â
The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. on the north side of Worthen Arena, between Gates 1 and 2. A reception will follow in the Alumni Lounge, located on the lower level of Worthen Arena inside Gate 1. The men's volleyball team will then host Quincy at 7:30 p.m.
Â
All of the evening's events are free and open to the public.
Â
Scheduled for completion by summer 2018, the 19,000-square-foot practice center will provide dedicated practice and meeting space for four Ball State teams: men's and women's basketball and men's and women's volleyball. It will be attached to Worthen Arena.
Â
Part of the $20 million Cardinal Commitment campaign, the facility will feature two basketball and volleyball courts, a study room with 27 tiered seats for meetings and film review, a training room, and two meeting rooms overlooking the practice courts.
Â
The center is named for hall of fame men's volleyball coach Don Shondell, a 1952 Ball State alumnus, who has established a legacy almost unmatched by any other individual in college volleyball history.
Â
Shondell formed the first club team at Ball State in 1960 and spent the next four years working tirelessly and overcoming opposition to make men's volleyball a varsity sport at Ball State. Â As head coach he accumulated a career record of 769-280-6 (.732), posting the second most wins in NCAA men's volleyball history and the most wins by a Ball State coach in any sport. He coached the Cardinals to 19 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) championships in 34 years.
