Women's Tennis Dominates Western Michigan On the Road In MAC Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Ball State women's tennis team (13-2, 1-0 MAC) earned a convincing 6-1 victory at Western Michigan (6-8, 0-1 MAC) Friday in its Mid-American Conference opener at Sorensen Courts.
The Broncos started the match off strong after taking the doubles point from Ball State. Barbare Eristavi and Katja Fevralev were the first WMU twosome off the court after their 6-2 take down over Isabelle Dohanics and Toni Ormond on court three. For the Cardinals, Audrey Berger and Julia Sbircea evened doubles play with their 6-4 defeat over Denise Azcui and Olivia Myers at the No. 2 postition. After that, the Broncos would end up clinching doubles action on the top court after Melina Lyubomirova alongside partner Tracy Kuhle earned a 6-4 defeat over Peyton Gollhofer and Carmen Blanco.
Ball State then earned the come from behind victory after taking all six singles matches from Western Michigan. Five of the six matches were decided by three set thrillers. Rosalinda Calderon would be the lone Cardinal to take her opponent down in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot. She was the first off the court and gave Ball State its first point of the day. Gollhofer, Blanco and Ormond all dropped their first sets to their Western Michigan competition but came back in sets two and three, taking the matches from the Broncos on their respective courts. On court five, Berger clinched the win for Ball State after registering a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision over Eristavi.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action at Northern Illinois Sunday at 2 p.m. (EST). The Cardinals return home next Friday against Bowling Green at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weathering permitting. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
