MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team will make its first appearance of the 2017-18 season Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena when the Cardinals host the University of Illinois Springfield in exhibition play. Â
The Cardinals roster includes seven newcomers and six returnees this season. Â Ball State returns three All-Mid-American Conference selections from last year's squad; junior honorable mention Carmen Grande (7.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg), senior second team honoree Moriah Monaco (16.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and senior sixth player of the year Destiny Washington (10.2, ppg, 6.2 rpg).
Ball State welcomes four true freshmen to the team in guard Katie Helgason, guard Maliah Howard-Bass, forward Sara Price and forward Oshlynn Brown. The Cardinals also welcome three transfers to the roster this season. Senior forward Keri Kleist and junior guard Jasmin Samz, both of whom are eligible to play this season, as well as junior Zayn Dornstauder who must sit out this year due to NCAA transfer rules. Â
Last week, Moncao was named to the All-MAC West Division Preseason team. Â The returning starter was the second-highest scorer and rebounder for Ball State last year. Â A two-time All-MAC selection, Monaco broke the single season three point record last year with 101 3-pointers made. Â Monaco scored in double figures in 26 of the Cardinals' 32 games last season, while starting every contest. Â She became the third player last season, and the 27th in program history, to reach 1,000 points for her career by knocking down a 3-pointer at the 4:23 mark of the second quarter versus Central Michigan (Feb. 25).
As a team, Ball State was picked to finish third in the MAC West Division this season behind Central Michigan and Toledo. Â The Cardinals were also predicted as one of the schools to potentially win the MAC regular season and tournament championship.
Last season, the Cardinals made their fifth straight appearance in the Women's National Invitation Tournament and finished the season with a 21-10 record, marking only the sixth time in program history Ball State has had 20-plus wins in a season. Â Ball State head coach Brady Sallee, who enters his sixth year at the helm of the women's program, became only the second coach in program history to accomplish back-to-back 20-plus win seasons -- 2015-16 (22-10) and 2016-17 (21-10). Â In 2016-17, the Cardinals made their 27th appearance in the MAC Tournament as the second seed, punching its ticket straight to Cleveland for the fourth time under Sallee.
Ball State officially opens the 2017-18 season on the road at Cleveland State Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. Â After that, the Cardinals return to Worthen Arena Nov. 13 for their home opener against Missouri State at 7 p.m.
