Challenging Schedule Awaits Ball State Baseball This Spring
November 17, 2016 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – It's just three months until the first pitch of the 2017 season for the Ball State baseball team. Head coach Rich Maloney announced the team's schedule today, featuring trips to Florida, South Carolina and Oregon, a game at Victory Field in Indianapolis and a contest against the defending national champion.
Ball State, which won the Mid-American Conference West Division title for the second time in the last three seasons in 2016, is slated to take on seven teams which played in the NCAA Baseball Championship last spring – Alabama State, Boston College, Coastal Carolina, Louisville, Ohio State, Western Carolina and Western Michigan.
Coastal Carolina, the 2016 NCAA champion, will host Ball State as part of a weekend series in Conway, South Carolina, on Feb. 24. Ball State will make a cross-country trip in early March to take on Oregon State in a four-game series. The Beavers won the 2006 and 2007 NCAA titles and advanced to the College World Series most recently in 2013.
"Our belief is that if you want to be the best, you have to play against the best and this schedule is no different as we play several games against some of the best teams in the country," Maloney said. "Part of our student-athlete experience is to play against great teams in great venues. Playing at Bright House Field, the Philadelphia Phillies' spring training site, Coastal Carolina, the defending national champion and its outstanding Springs Brooks Stadium, and Oregon State's Goss Stadium give our players the opportunity to create memories with their teammates that last a lifetime."
Another non-conference highlight is scheduled for April 25 when Ball State and Indiana will meet at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis. Fellow Hoosier schools Purdue (March 22), Butler (March 28), Valparaiso (April 11) and Fort Wayne (May 9) will visit Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex throughout the season.
The Cardinals begin MAC play with a home series against Kent State on March 24. The Golden Flashes won the MAC East Division last year with a conference-best record of 20-4. Other MAC teams scheduled to visit Muncie include Bowling Green, Ohio and Toledo. Ball State's four league road opponents are Buffalo, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
The MAC Baseball Tournament begins May 24 and runs through May 28 at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
