Shawn Comer was named the director of sports medicine at Ball State in June 2023. Comer directly oversees all aspects of medical care for 19 Division I sports along with a staff of nine certified/licensed staff athletic trainers. He also serves as the athletic trainer for both the women’s soccer and softball programs. Prior to his appointment as the director of sports medicine, Shawn was the associate athletic trainer from 2007 until 2023 and was the head athletic trainer for the football program from 2005 until 2022. As the head athletic trainer of the football program, Shawn was responsible for all aspects of medical care for the football team. Shawn was a part of two MAC football championships and seven bowl games during his tenure. Shawn returned to Ball State in August 1996, as the assistant athletic trainer working primarily with the football program and men’s and women’s track teams.
Before returning to Ball State, Shawn was the head athletic trainer at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. While at Saint Joseph’s, Shawn was responsible for the health care of 16 varsity sports and five junior varsity sports. He coordinated the hiring of the first full-time assistant and oversite of several athletic training students. He also implemented the first athletic training education minor program through the school of physical education.
Before landing the head athletic trainers' position at Saint Joseph’s College, Shawn was the assistant athletic trainer at Butler University. He was assigned to work with the football and baseball programs.
Shawn earned his master’s degree from Ball State University in sports biomechanics and his bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in sports medicine with a minor in exercise science.
