Nine-time All-American Mike Kerr enters his second season as the graduate assistant swimming coach for the Ball State University women's swimming and diving program.
Last season, Kerr helped coach the Ball State senior swimmer Emily Karwoski to school records in both the 100 breast (1:04.19) and 200 IM (2:04.23), as well as the second-best time in program history in the 200 breast (2:18.44). He also helped mentor the 200 medley relay to a school-record clocking of 1:43.82 at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
His efforts also helped junior Katie Bylsma establish the third-best marks in program history in both the 50 free (23.56) and 100 free (51.42). Sophomore Sara Hostetler and senior Sarah Kehe also tallied the third-best program marks in the 200 back (2:03.98) and 500 free (5:01.36), respectively, with his assistance.
Prior to joining the Ball State staff, Kerr was an assistant swimming coach at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., for the 2008-09 season. In his one-year stint with the Little Giants, Kerr assisted in stroke technique training and administered daily workout routines, which resulted in school-record performances in four sprint events and one relay race.
Kerr also helped with recruiting at Wabash and was responsible for organizing the school's Swim Lesson Program, which helped teach over 60 area youth how to swim. Kerr also oversaw Wabash's lifeguard program, managing 15 on-campus employees.
In the summer of 2009, Kerr served as an Assistant Coach and Counselor for the University of Texas at Austin Swim Camp. Over the five one-week sessions, Kerr worked with over 900 children between the ages of 8-18. While coaching alongside some of the biggest names in college swimming, Kerr taught specific stroke techniques and drill work to aspiring collegiate swimmers.
Prior to his collegiate coaching stint, Kerr was a nine-time All-American swimmer at Clarion University. A three-time NCAA Division II National Qualifier, Kerr was named the team captain his senior season. Kerr earned his final three All-America awards at the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Championships by placing 14th in the 100 backstroke (50.78), while swimming the first leg for both the 200 medley (7th, 1:32.41) and 400 medley (13th, 3:24.44) relays. Over his career, Kerr was also a four-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection.
Kerr, who earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Clarion in 2008, is currently working towards a master's degree in sports administration at Ball State.
