Clay Murray enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Ball State swimming & diving program in 2022-23 after spending last season in the same role at John Carroll University. As a member of the Blue Streaks’ staff, which is led by former Ball State standout Tanner Barton, Murray primarily focused on distance swimming.
In his lone season at JCU, Murray helped both the men’s and women’s squads earn Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, with the men’s side winning all five relay events and sending all five relays to the NCAA DIII National Championships.
“Clay brings a lot of energy as well as a diverse set of skills to our team,” Agnew said. “With his experience on-the-deck coaching, in administration, and recruiting, he is ready to hit the ground running to help propel our Cardinals forward here and now!”
Murray’s work helped the team place 13th overall at the NCAA DIII National Championships, the best finish at the event in program history. For his work, Murray was named the 2022 John Carroll University Assistant Coach of the Year and was honored as a member of the 2021-2022 Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Coaching Staff of the Year.
“I want to thank Coach J. and the administration for welcoming me into the Ball State community,” Murray said. “It's been very exciting to watch the growth of the program over the past few years with Coach J. leading the team. I'm looking forward to forming great relationships with our student-athletes and helping the program's performance in a significant way.”
Before joining the John Carroll coaching staff, Murray spent two seasons as the primary sprint coach at his alma mater, Westminster College. The program’s recruiting coordinator, in which he helped bring in 39 student-athletes, Murray designed and monitored lifting programs for athletes of different strokes and specialties. He also managed the Titans' social media accounts and participated in the CSCAA mentoring program.
Prior to his coaching career, Murray was a four-year letterwinner at Westminster College, graduating in 2019 with a bachelor’s in child and family studies. A sprint specialist himself, Murray finished his career as a Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.25) and the 200 medley relay (1:33.06).
He also graduated with the ninth-fastest individual time in the Titan’s record books in the 100 butterfly (52.26) and was a two-time All-PAC selection, earning first team has a senior and second team as a junior.
