Tori Magner, who spent the last five seasons at Indiana State, enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Ball State softball team in 2022.
“Ball State Softball is extremely excited to have Tori Magner on staff,” Schurr said. “Tori brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to this program, and I look for her to make an immediate impact with both on and off the field.”
During her time on the Sycamores staff, Magner served in nearly every capacity. She started as the program’s outfield, catching, and baserunning coach in the 2017 season, but quickly found herself elevated to interim head coach 26 games into the season.
“It's such an honor being a part of the staff and program here at Ball State,” Magner said. “The team has welcomed me from day one and I'm excited to go to bat with the staff and players. The competitive fire and passion for the game shows in everything they do here. I'm glad to finally be on this side of the lines with them. I can't thank Coach Lacy Schurr and Jeremy Manley enough! Chirp Chirp!”
As interim head coach, she helped the 2017 squad finish the year with 24 wins, which ranked as the seventh-best win total in program history at the time. In addition, the 2017 squad set program records for runs scored (241) and saves (6). It also boasted the second-best RBI (197) and double plays (26) totals in program history, as well as the third-best batting average (.282) and on base percentage (.357).
Following her stint as interim coach, Magner returned to her original role as assistant coach, with the Sycamores following up the solid 2017 campaign with 26 wins in 2018. After the 2019 season, Magner took over duties as the program’s pitching coach and also oversaw recruiting and scouting efforts.
The Sycamores’ pitchers made major strides in Missouri Valley Conference play under Magner’s guidance, dropping the staff ERA from 8.01 before she took over to 3.73 by the end of last season. The staff also raised its strikeout total by 106 from the previous conference season. Magner mentored freshman Lexi Benko to a 2.55 ERA, the best for a freshman in MVC play in program history, while the staff’s 3.73 ERA in conference action was the best ever for an Indiana State squad.
In all, Magner helped Indiana State student-athletes earn 15 All-MVC honors in her five seasons. In addition, the Sycamores had six National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region honorees during the span, and the program’s first-ever MVC Freshman of the Year.
Prior to joining the ISU staff, Magner was an assistant coach at Plainfield High School (2015-17), helping the program amass a 46-9 record and win a sectional title. She also spent six summers working with the 18U Indiana Stingers travel team, with the 2016 squad earning state and national rankings.
As a student-athlete, Magner started her collegiate career at IUPUI (2011), before transferring to Indiana Wesleyan where she was a two-sport athlete competing in both softball (2015-16) and soccer (2015).
During her two years at Indiana Wesleyan, the Wildcats made two appearances in the opening round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship. In 2015, IWU finished the season with a 47-12 (.797) overall record, a 26-8 (.765) Crossroads League record, and won the Crossroads League Tournament to earn a berth into the national tournament.
The following season, the Wildcats boasted a 44-18 (.710) overall record, including a 26-10 (.722) mark in conference play, and earned an at-large bid into the NAIA National Championship. IWU went on to make history in the national tournament, defeating the No. 2 seed Davenport Michigan and No. 3 seed Olivet Nazarene. Unfortunately, Indiana Wesleyan fell to No. 1 seed Southeastern (Fla.) in the final game of the opening round bracket.
