Asfaw was hired in April 2026 at Ball State after two seasons at Towson as an assistant coach and director of basketball operations and one season before that at Pacific.
"Beruk and I worked together for two years at USC," Ball State head coach Chris Capko said. "He is very sharp, detailed, organized and someone I trust will carry out with detail, some of the most important parts of our program. Beruk will be dedicated to this program and has a bright future ahead of him as a coach in this business."
Prior to Pacific, Asfaw was a graduate assistant at the University of Southern California (USC) for two seasons from 2021-23. In the 2021-22 campaign, the Trojans soared to No. 5 in the nation with a 13-0 start. USC finished with a 26-8 record, including a 14-6 Pac-12 mark, and earned an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament.
In 2022-23, the Trojans hit the 20-win mark again with a 22-11 record, including another 14-6 Pac-12 record and earning another NCAA tournament berth.
Asfaw served as a consultant for the Ethiopian Basketball Federation from 2020-21. He was an assistant boys’ basketball coach in Cincinnati at Hughes STEM High.
Asfaw earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Washington and earned his Master’s Degree in international policy and management from USC in 2023.
