Herlocker (formerly Davies) embarks on her fourth season as an associated head coach for the Cardinals.Â
Â
The Cardinals have a lot to look forward to this upcoming season. Ball State continued to improve with the help of Davies-Herlocker guidance last year, driving toward the goal of returning the Cardinals historic program back to prominence.
Ball State ended the season with six victories, including wins over fellow Mid-American Conference schools Appalachian State, Ohio, Longwood, Bellarmine and Central Michigan. The team also limited opponents to 1.81 goals per game for its best showing on defense since allowing a 1.78 average in 2002.Â
Off the field, the Cardinals made program history by placing the entire 24-member squad on the 2020 NFHCA (National Field Hockey College Association) Academic Squad. The total is the second-most amongst all NCAA Division I field hockey programs this season.
Â
In her first season at Ball State, Davies helped Bernthal coach 19 Academic All-Mid-American Conference honorees, four All-MAC postseason recipients, 31 NFHCA Academic award winners while the team also earned the NFHCA National Academic Award twice.
In 2019-20, Davies-Herlocker helped Bernthal take Ball State’s defense to new heights. The Cardinals registered four shutouts that season; Davidson College (1-0), Saint Louis (3-0), Central Michigan (2-0) and Appalachian State (1-0). The four shutouts rank the most a Ball State team has compiled since the 2004 season. On Oct. 10, the Cardinals were tied for the top spot nationally with Dartmouth in defensive saves with 10 and were also ranked ninth in save percentage (.798).Â
Prior to Ball State, Davies and Bernthal worked together at the University of Richmond, where Davies served as an assistant coach and Director of Operations. Her duties included being a liaison between academic advisors and student-athletes along with breaking down game film and aiding in the recruitment process. A highlight of her time with the Spiders was working with Meg Miller, who made the2016 PanAm Games roster for Team USA U-21.
"She has the remarkable ability of identifying future potential in prospects and helping student-athletes maximize that potential on and off the field once they arrive on campus" Bernthal added. "Her ability to teach the game technically and tactically will raise every Ball State athlete to new heights. I couldn't ask for a better addition to our staff."
Other coaching experiences for Davies include time with USA Field Hockey Futures, Panthers United FHC and the Edge Field Hockey Club. While with the Edge Field Hockey Club she coached the U19 team to a gold medal at national tournament in 2010 and 2012.
Davies played four years collegiately at Richmond where she served as team captain for two straight years. She earned first team all-conference three times, All-South Region two times and all-state once. Davies was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and second team all-conference in 2010. While at Richmond, Davies helped her team to a conference championship and NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2011. She was also a member of the 2010 USA Field Hockey Junior National Team.
Davies has a bachelor of arts in psychology from Richmond and earned her master's degree through North Dakota State University in 2019.Â
Davies married David Herlocker on May 11th where the couple resides in Fishers and are expecting their first child.
