Dustin Glant, a former professional pitcher in the Diamondbacks organization, has made Ball State a destination for pitchers with similar pro ball dreams. In his three seasons at BSU, the Cardinals have set a school record in strikeouts each season and four Ball State pitchers have been drafted.
RECORDS AND WINNING AT BALL STATE
In 2019, Ball State pitchers made national waves under Glant. The staff led the nation with 11.1 Ks per 9 innings and struck out 628 batters. The school season record for team strikeouts was 491 in 2017 (Glant's first season) and 520 in 2018 (Glant's second season). The 2019 team went 38-19 - including a 20-5 conference record - and finished second in both the conference regular season standings and tournament. Three pitchers - Drey Jameson, John Baker and Nick Floyd - were voted first team All-MAC in 2019. Jameson and Baker each earned freshman All-American honors and Jameson was 2019 MAC Pitcher of the Year.
Since 2017, Ball State is 100-73 (.578) overall with Glant on the coaching staff. When he was a volunteer assistant in 2013, Ball State won 31 games and made it to the conference tourney championship game.
PRO DEVELOPMENT FOR PITCHERS
Pitchers have developed under Glant, with at least one arm getting picked in the MLB Draft every season. Jameson went from undrafted out of high school to the 34th overall pick in the 2019 draft in 2019. Another pitcher, John Baker, was selected by Miami in the 2019 draft. In 2018, the Cincinnati Reds selected Evan Marquardt in the 20th round and in Glant's first year Colin Brockhouse was drafted by Toronto and Kevin Marnon signed a free agent deal with Minnesota.
AS A HEAD COACH
Glant also has head coaching experience at both the high school and college level. He led Lapel High School in Indiana to a sectional championship and No. 1 ranking in Class 2A. He also was head coach at Division III Anderson University in 2016.
PLAYING CAREER
Glant played six years in the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system as a right-handed pitcher. He was selected by the Diamondbacks in the seventh round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. He advanced as high as Triple-A with the Diamondbacks in 2007 and 2008 and then continued his professional career in four different independent leagues from 2009-11. His career took him to the Schaumburg Flyers (Northern League), Mayos de Navajoa (Mexican Pacific League), Medellin Potros (Colombian Winter League) and Winnipeg Goldeyes (American Association) before he entered coaching.
