MUNCIE, IND. - - The busiest stretch of the fall closes for the Ball State women's golf team this weekend when it competes at the Fighting Irish Classic hosted by Notre Dame at the Warren Golf Course.
The two-day event on the par 71, 6,062-yard course beings Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the first of two rounds on the day. Sunday's final round of the 54-hole event will also start at 8:30 a.m., with both days featuring shotgun starts.
Ball State is coming off back-to-back strong showings, winning the Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 14-15) with a program record team score of -6 (858) and turning in a solid effort to finish 14th among a highly talented field at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (Sept. 21-23) earlier this week.
The Cardinals closed both of those events with the lowest rounds in program history at -7 (281).
Leading the charge is freshman Taylor Larkins who took home individual medalists honors at the Brittany Kelly Classic, while leading the squad and tying for 26th overall at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic. She shot -2 (214) to win BSU's annual home event by one stroke, while finishing -4 (212) earlier this week in Colorado.
The round of -4 (212) is the fourth-lowest round in program history both relative to par and by total strokes. Overall, Larkins has recorded five rounds under par this season, including a pair of -4 (68)s in the second round of each of the last two tournaments, which tie as the fourth-lowest rounds in program history.
Junior Sophie Korthuijs also turned in a scorecard of -4 (68) in her final round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic for the lowest round of her collegiate career. She has three rounds below par this season which is tied for second on the team with sophomore Ashley Kirkland.
Kirkland has a pair of rounds at -2 (70) this season and finished the Golfweek Red Sky Classic at -2 (214), which ties with Larkins for the now sixth-lowest individual 54-hole score in program history.
In fact, a Ball State women's golfer has only finished a 54-hole event under par 12 times in program history, with three of them coming through the first three events this season.
The Cardinals will be looking to add to the total this weekend when it takes on the Warren Golf Course for the first time as a team since the 2004-05 season.
Ball State's lowest individual round on the course came from Brittany Kelly during the 2011 NCAA Central Regional when she shot +3 (75) in her final round. Kelly also owns BSU's lowest 54-hole total on the course with a +17 (233) in her regional appearance.
In team competition, Ball State's lowest individual round is a +4 (76) from Carmen Bodine during the 2003 Notre Dame Invitational (Sept. 27-28), while Chelsie Flannery's +23 (239) in the 2004 Notre Dame Invitational (Sept. 4-5) is BSU's best 54-hole effort at Warren.
BSU's best team round on the course is a +25 (313) in the 2003 event.
