Women’s Golf Off To Solid Start in Pawleys Island
April 06, 2026 | Women's Golf
PAWLEYS ISLAND, South Carolina - - The Ball State women's golf team got off to a solid start Monday, shooting +9 (293) as a team to rank fourth among the 19-team field after the opening round of the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge.
"It was a solid start to the week for us today," head coach Cameron Andry said. "We did a lot of things well, collectively. I thought we drove it very well which is paramount at Caledonia with how tight some holes play."
The Cardinals are five strokes off the tournament led, held by Charleston Southern at +4 (288).
Starting on hole 10 on the 6,082-yard, 71-par Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, the Cardinals tallied 14 total bridies on the day, one off the tournament lead, paced by senior Sabrina Langerak who was also the team's leader in the clubhouse at +1 (72).
Langerak carded four birdies over her opening 18 holes, including back-to-back red numbers on holes 15 and 16. She is currently tied for 12th among the 100-player field. Katie Stephens and Eugenie Varet of Charleston Southern are tied for the tournament lead at -4 (67).
Overall, all five Cardinals finished the day among the top third of the field, with senior Sarah Gallagher one stroke off Langerak's pace at +2 (73). Gallagher finished her day with one birdie and 14 pars.
Ball State also counted a pair of +3 (74)s from freshman Skylar Dean and junior JJ Gregston. Both registered three birdies in their first tour of the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.
Sophomore Sophie Korthuijs also carded three birdies in her opening round and finished the day at +4 (75).
Ball State's best hole Monday was the 512-yard, par-5 eighth, with three of the five golfers claiming birdies to play the hole at a combined -3 (4.40). The Cardinals also led the tournament field on the courses' par 4s, at +3 (4.07).
"While we didn't play the par 5's all that well, it was mostly mistakes with wedges on those holes that hurt us," Andry added. "Overall, we did a really nice job managing when we made mistakes which allowed us to only have two doubles as a team."
Round two of the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge will tee off at 8 a.m. with another double tee start. Ball State's starting hole and times will be announced later this evening based on today's results.
