Langerak & Gallagher Lead Ball State Surge on Day 2 of Iguana Invite

HUMACAO, Puerto Rico. - - Led by rounds of -2 (70) from senior Sabrina Langerak and -1 (71) from senior Sarah Gallagher, the Ball State women's golf team climbed up the leaderboard on the second day of the Puerto Rico Iguana Invitational hosted by the Cardinals.
"It was a fun day here in Puerto Rico," head coach Cameron Andry exclaimed! "I was incredibly proud of Sabrina and Sarah for the way they bounced back today with great rounds! They both have a lot of resiliency, so we expected them to bounce back, but they were even better than we expected."
Overall, the Cardinals turned in its second-lowest round of the season at -1 (287) to climb into a tie for third with Arkansas State at +18 (594) over the first two days on the Flamboyan Course at the Palmas Del Mar Golf Club. Georgia State leads the event at +8 (584), followed by Central Arkansas at +16 (592).
Junior JJ Gregston, who shot +2 (74) in her second round, is still the team's leader in the clubhouse and is tied for third among the 45-player field at +1 (145). In Wednesday's second round, Gregston tallied four more birdies to raise her tournament total to nine which is tied for first among the field.
Gregston has played the par-5s strong all week and is tied for sixth among the field in par-5 average at -3 (4.63).
Langerak's second-round score of -2 (70) ties as the second-lowest individual round of the tournament and ties as her lowest round of the season. The effort, which included six birdies, helped her climb 15 sports up the leaderboard into a tie for 29th overall at +11 (155).
With her -1 (71), Gallagher tied as the biggest upward mover Wednesday, climbing 19 sports into a tie for 22nd at +9 (153). Her second tour of the 72-par, 6,161-yard course included five birdies, raising her tournament total to six.
Also turning in a solid day for the squad was freshman Sophie Korthuijs who shot E (72) to move up two spots into a tie for seventh at +3 (147). Korthuijs carded four birdies in her second round and is currently tied for fourth among the tournament field at seven.
"Sophie and JJ also played very solid rounds," Andry added. "Overall, we did a much better job of minimizing big numbers today. It's easier to keep good momentum when we limit mistakes to only costing us a shot. When we are playing par-5's well, as we have this week, we can shoot good scores when we keep big numbers off the card."
Senior Madelin Boyd and junior Madelyn Young tied as Ball State's top individual players on the day, each shooting +4 (76) in their Wednesday rounds. Boyd's round included three birdies and eight pars, while Young's round featured two birdies and 11 pars.
Overall, the Cardinals lead the field on the par-5s, playing them at a combined -9 (4.78) among its team competitors. Ball State also leads the field with 34 total birdies, 10 more than Arkansas State in second.
The third and final round of the Puerto Rico Iguana Invitational will begin at 8 a.m. AT / 7 a.m. ET with another shotgun start. Ball State's team players will start on holes 6-11, while its individuals will start on holes 14, 16, 17 and 18.
