Gymnastics Scores Season-High 195.750 at Pitt Quad

PITTSBURGH - - The Ball State gymnastics team turned in its best performance of the season to date Friday, scoring a season-high 195.750 at the Pitt Quad inside Fitzgerald Field House.

With the effort, the Cardinals (11-6) scored head-to-head wins over both Towson (195.025) and Temple (191.975), while falling just short of host Pitt (196.300).

Ball State set the tone for the night early, scoring a season-best 49.200 on floor in its opening rotation. Senior Zoe Middleton capped the effort by tying her season-best with a 9.900. Junior Ava Molina was not far behind, earning a 9.875. The pair tied for second and fourth, respectively, among the 24 floor competitors.

Middleton was not done there, however, as she followed by placing second on beam with a team-best 9.850. She would also score 9.775 on both vault and bars to with the all-around with a season-best score of 39.300.

Other highlights from the night included a 9.900 from junior Ashley Szymanski to place third on bars and a career-high tying 9.850 from freshman Carley Stalder on floor.

Overall, the Cardinals earned nine scores of 9.800-or-higher on the way to its season-best effort.

ROTATION 1: Floor (49.200)
- The Cardinals scored a season-best 49.200 which ties for the 22nd-highest team floor score in program history
- Middleton anchored the Cardinals with a 9.900, her second such score on floor this season and the eighth time of her career
- One spot earlier, Molina added a 9.875
- The Cardinals also counted a 9.850 from Stalder, a 9.800 from senior Alauna Simms and a 9.775 from sophomore Avery Kantor

ROTATION 2: Vault (48.900)
- The second rotation was highlighted by scores of 9.825 from both junior Karli Mercer and freshman Ava Thurston
- Thurston's score was a career high, while Mercer's tied her career-best mark
- Next were scores of 9.775 from both Middleton and senior Mary Rose Bellan
- The Cardinals also counted a 9.700 from sophomore Jordanna Phillis

ROTATION 3: Bars (48.950)
- Szymanski capped the third rotation with her second 9.900 of the year and fourth score of 9.900-or-higher this season
- Junior Delaney McMahon and Middleton provided Ball State's second-best scores with 9.775s
- The Cardinals also counted a pair of 9.750s from Molina and Bellan

ROTATION 4: Beam (48.700)
- Middleton led the Cardinals on beam with a 9.850, followed closely by Szymanski at 9.825
- McMahon added a 9.750, having scored at least 9.725 in all nine of her beam routines this season
- Ball State also counted a 9.650 from junior Lindsay Fuller and a 9.625 from Stalder

- The lone all-around competitor of the night, Middleton scored a season-best 39.300
- The effort was highlighted by a 9.900 on floor and a 9.850 on beam

The Ball State gymnastics team returns to action Saturday, March 7, when it travels to College Park, Maryland, for the Maryland Quad. Joining the Cardinals and host Terps will be Cornell and Temple, with action slated to start at 7 p.m.
