Trio of +2 (74)s Leads Women's Golf on Day 1 of Rio Verde Collegiate

RIO VERDE, Arizona - - The Ball State women's golf team used a trio of +2 (74) scores to stay near the top of the leaderboard on the opening day of the Rio Verde Collegiate hosted by Western Michigan.

"Today was a solid day," head coach Cameron Andry said. "We were not super sharp with our wedges and putting, so we will need to clean that up for tomorrow. For this being our first competitive round this spring, we are in pretty good shape."

As a team, the Cardinals shot +10 (298) and are currently fourth among the 19-team field on the White Wing Course at the Rio Verde Country Club. BSU is just six strokes back of co-leaders Xavier and Wichita State which both finished the day at +4 (292).

Junior JJ Gregston, senior Sarah Gallagher and senior Sabrina Langerak each finished the day tied for 10th overall at +2 (74).Â

Gregston completed her first tour of the 72-par, 6,001-yard course with 16 pars and a pair of bogeys. Gallagher and Langerak each tallied two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys.

Sophomore Sophie Korthuijs rounded out Ball State's countable scores at +4 (76). Her round included a pair of birdies and 10 pars.Â

Senior Jasmine Driscoll added a team-high three birdies and five pars, while finishing the day at +8 (80). As an individual, junior Jenna Estravillo shot +7 (79) in a round featuring 11 pars.

Overall, the Cardinals collected nine total birdies during the first round, while tying for fifth in par 5 average (5.00; E) and finishing sixth in par 4 average (4.29; +12).

The second round of the Rio Verde Collegiate begins at 10 a.m. ET / Noon MT Saturday with another shotgun start. Ball State's team will once again start off the first three holes, with Estravillo back on 18.
