Women's Golf Off To Solid Start at Puerto Rico Shootout
March 04, 2025 | Women's Golf
"Collectively we had some good today and some bad," head coach Cameron Andry said. "I thought our top five all played pretty well tee to green but we struggled with get anything going with the putter."
It's the best team round the Cardinals have recorded in four attempts on the 6,026-yard, 72-par course nestled up against the Caribbean Sea which has been ranked as the second-best course in Puerto Rico by Golf Digest.
Â
The effort, which included rounds of +2 (74) from both junior Sarah Gallagher and sophomore JJ Gregston and rounds of +4 (76) from both junior Madelin Boyd and Sophie Korthuijs, has the Cardinals in ninth overall among the 13-team field.Â
Â
Overall, Ball State is five strokes shy of breaking into the top five and 13 shy of tournament co-leaders Southern Mississippi and UNCG which both finished the round at -1 (287).
Â
Individually, Gallagher and Gregston are tied for 23rd overall among the 82-player field with their rounds of +2 (74). Gallagher's round included two birdies and 12 pars, while Gregston logged three birdies and 10 pars. Both Cardinals registered birdies on the course's longest hole, the 495-yard, par-5 16th.
"I was proud of JJ bouncing back after a tough week last week with a solid round today," Andry said. "She hit the ball very well, which I believe is a direct result of the effort and focused she showed in practice over the last week. Sarah played really stead golf and just didn't get much to go on the greens. I think her game is in a good place heading into the rest of the week."
Korthuijs, the reigning MAC Women's Golfer of the Week, also carded three birdies on the day including her final hole, the 327-yard, par-4 18th. Boyd finished her round with one birdie and 12 pars.Rounding out Ball State's team players was junior Jasmine Driscoll with a +8 (80). Her day included a birdie on the 384-yard, par-4 fifth, as well as 10 pars.
"Sophie had a couple of rough stretches but she came up with a big birdie on her last hole to salvage a usable score for us," Andry said. "Jasmine's ball-striking was far better than the score she shot so we'll try to clean up a few things on and around the greens for her and I think she can get it rolling the rest of the week."
"It was great to see Jenna fire another solid round," Andry exclaimed! "Her game has improved a lot over the last few months and I love what we're getting from her."
Sophomore Madelyn Young also turned in a solid effort at +5 (77), including a birdie on the 472-yard, par-5 seventh and 11 pars. In addition, seniors Payton Bennett and Sabrina Langerak each carded a birdie in their round.Â
Overall, Ball State's nine golfers combined for 16 birdies over the course of the day, while the team ranked fourth overall on par 5 average at 4.85 (-3).

Round two of the Puerto Rico Shootout hosted by Ball State tees off with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 a.m. Wednesday back at the Flamboyan Course at the Palmas Del Mar Country Club.
