KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Despite a strong showing in singles play, where Ball State picked up three points, the Cardinals (9-7, 2-3 MAC) fell to Western Michigan (13-8, 3-2 MAC) in a Saturday afternoon Mid-American Conference clash inside the West Hills Athletic Club.
Western Michigan opened with a hot start on its home courts, taking the doubles point from the Cardinals. The Broncos produced 6-1 wins at courts two and three to secure the first score of the afternoon.
Though Ball State trailed 1-0 leading into singles action, it was not long before the red and white would strike back with a tally of their own. The Cardinals earned their first point of the outing from Nathaniel Webster, who was playing in his hometown of Kalamazoo. Webster produced a swift straight-set victory against the Broncos' Ashton Adesoro at the No. 1 singles spot.
Following behind their teammate on the top court, Jacks Lancaster and Drew Hayward each earned victories at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Western Michigan also added another point by winning court six, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Cardinals.
Ball State was just one win away from securing the team victory late into singles play, with courts three and four still in action. The Broncos spoiled the Cardinals' comeback bid, however, by securing three-set victories at the No. 3 and 4 spots.
The Cardinals will conclude their four-match road stint next Saturday, March 29, when they travel to take on Buffalo in another conference affair. First serve is set for 1 p.m. in Western New York.
