Women’s Volleyball Drops MAC Opener to BGSU
September 27, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - In a battle of two of the league's top programs, the Ball State women's volleyball team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 30-28, 17-25, 15-11) setback to Bowling Green Friday night in Worthen Arena.
"We had moments where we did some good things, but way too many moments of not playing in a mature way," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "That's what I kept talking to our team about. There were too many moments where we were trying to do too much, overplaying. It's reminding ourselves to play confident and do basic things. That's something we can take with us into the practice gym. We have to play harder."
Despite the loss, the Cardinals (7-5; 0-1 MAC) did manage to out-hit the Falcons (6-6; 1-0 MAC) by a .280 to .260 mark. Ball State entered the week leading the league with a .267 team hitting percentage.
The effort was aided by four Cardinals with double digit kills Friday, starting with a match-high 20 from freshman outside Carson Tyler. It was her fourth match with at least 20 kills this season, while she tied her career high with nine digs and added a service ace and a block assist.
Redshirt sophomore outside Aniya Kennedy followed with 17 kills, while graduate middle Aayinde Smith and junior opposite Madison Buckley added 10 apiece. Smith and Buckley each finished the night hitting .474 (10-1-19), while Buckley lead the team with five total blocks and Smith was credited with four.
Also having a string night at the net was sophomore middle Gwen Crull who collected four total blocks and a pair of kills against her former squad.
Senior setter Megan Wielonski led the offense with 53 assists and added 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. She also served up three aces to raise her career total to 160.
Freshman libero Sophie Ledbetter led the Ball State backcourt with 11 digs, while senior defensive specialist Kendall Seimet had eight.
Mia Tyler led four Falcons in double figures with 17 kills, while Lindsey LaPinta had a match-high 14 digs.
Ball State and Bowling Green will square off again Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. for Volley Card Club and Camper Day inside Worthen Arena.
All members of the Volley Card Club can take part in a free post-match clinic, while anyone who attended a 2024 women's volleyball camp can receive free admission.
