Orioles Top Pitching Prospect Paces Minor Leagues in Strikeouts
Ball State baseball alumnus Chayce McDermott will be called up to the Baltimore Orioles to start against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night in his Major League debut.
The right-hander is tabbed as the Orioles' top pitching prospect by MLB.com and has struck out 129 (18 more than any other Minor League pitcher) in 91.0 innings this year while sporting a 3.96 ERA for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. The Orioles and Marlins are scheduled for a 6:40 p.m. ET first pitch in Miami for the middle game of a three-game series.
McDermott was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros after earning Second Team All-MAC and Second Team All-Region honors while going 8-2 with a 3.05 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 82.2 innings pitched as a junior at Ball State. The 125 punchouts were the second-most in a year in program history at the time while currently ranking third.
The Anderson, Ind., native's 12.88 strikeouts per nine innings ranks second in Ball State history while his 13.61 K/9 in 2021 stands as the third-most in a season.
"Chayce McDermott was an outstanding pitcher for us at Ball State, and to watch him develop before our eyes and then continue to progress in professional baseball has been a joy," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "Seeing one of your players realize his dream of playing in the big leagues is very special. Chayce embodies everything you want – highly competitive, great work ethic, belief in himself, passion and a student of the game. It's great to see his star shine.
"Chayce is the fourth former Ball State player to play in the big leagues this year and a fifth (Drey Jameson) is on a big league roster rehabbing."
McDermott joins Alex Call (Washington Nationals), Kyle Nicolas (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Zach Plesac (Los Angeles Angels) as former Ball State student-athletes to play in Major League Baseball this season.
