Baseball Rallies from Early Deficit to Take Down Top Seed Bowling Green

AVON, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to topple No. 1 seed Bowling Green by a score of 10-5 on Saturday afternoon in the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Crushers Stadium.
The Cardinals (35-22-1) plated nine unanswered runs after the Falcons (33-20) got a grand slam by first baseman TJ Takats in the bottom of the second inning.
Ball State scored five times in the fourth on a Houston King RBI grounder and two-run singles from Nick Husovsky and Decker Scheffler to gain a 5-4 lead. The No. 3 seed Cardinals tacked on a run in the sixth inning on a Michael Hallquist RBI single to score Dylan Grego and make it 6-4.
Husovsky punched a two-run home run to right field in the seventh to increase the advantage to 8-4 before Blake Bevis and Matthew Gonzalez knocked RBI singles in the eighth and ninth innings to provide the final scoring of the day for the Cardinals, who totaled 16 hits on the afternoon.
Ball State starter Will Jacobson grinded out 4.0 innings of four-run ball while striking out four. Sam Klein (2-0) earned the win by striking out five in 5.0 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen.
Gonzalez went 4-for-6 with a double and two runs scored a day after hitting a game-winning home run, and Bevis went 3-for-5 with a double. Husovsky tallied four RBI for the game as Scheffler and Hallquist also had multi-hit performances.
With the win, Ball State eliminated Bowling Green from the tourney and must defeat Western Michigan twice to repeat as MAC Tournament champions. The Cardinals and Broncos play at 6 p.m. on Saturday night and will play at noon on Sunday if Ball State wins.
