Softball Falls to Miami in MAC Softball Championship Game
May 11, 2024 | Softball
AKRON, Ohio - - Playing its fifth game in a little less than 40 hours, time finally caught up with sixth-seeded Ball State as it suffered an 8-0 (5) setback to top-seeded Miami in the championship game of the Mid-American Conference Softball Championship Saturday afternoon at Firestone Stadium.
Â
After a miraculous run which saw the Cardinals (29-29) win three games and eliminate No. 5 Central Michigan, No. 4 Toledo and No. 2 Ohio on Friday, it was a 57-minute weather delay which seemingly snapped BSU's momentum and helped the RedHawks (48-7) claim its third straight tournament title.
Â
The Cardinals did a great job early, holding nationally ranked Miami off the board in both the first and second innings. Unfortunately, after Ball State stranded the bases loaded in the top of the third, the game went into a 57-minute weather delay.
Â
Miami came out of the delay on fire, scoring four in the third, three in the fourth and smashing a walk-off home run in the fifth to end the game.
Â
Ball State's lone hit was a first inning double from redshirt junior catcher McKayla Timmons.
Â
For their play over the course of the tournament, Timmons, graduate designated player Jazmyne Armendariz and redshirt sophomore shortstop McKenna Mulholland were named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Â
Â
SCORING SUMMARY - No. 6 Ball State 0 - No. 1 Miami 8 (5)
