Women’s Golf Holds Day 1 Lead at Lady Jaguar Invitational
April 13, 2024 | Women's Golf
INDIANAPOLIS - Led by an opening-round -1 (71) from junior Sabrina Langerak, the Ball State women's golf program holds the team lead after the first day of the Lady Jaguar Invitational at the Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.
"I was really pleased with the collective effort and focus today," head coach Cameron Andry said. "We played some very steady golf and when we did make mistakes, we responded and battled back."
Langerak led the field with six birdies over the first 18 holes on the 72-par, 6,157-yard course, including birdies on two of Plum Creek's four par 3s.
"Sabrina played some stellar golf, especially as the win picked up," Andry added. "We are excited to face the challenge tomorrow and continue to build."
Senior Kiah Parrott and sophomore Sarah Gallagher were right behind with four birdies apiece, while the Cardinals as a team led the field with 17 total. It is five more than any other team registered on the day.
The effort helped Ball State shot +8 (296) as a team, giving BSU a two-stroke lead over Butler in second at +10 (298).
Parrot would finish the first round tied for sixth overall, at +2 (74), with sophomore teammate Madelin Boydalso carding the same score. Boyd finished her day with a pair of birdies, recording them on back-to-back holes early in the round.
Rounding out the Cardinals lineup were sophomore Jasmine Driscoll in a tie for 24th at +5 (77) and Gallagher tied for 36th at +6 (78). Driscoll's round included a birdie on the par-3 ninth.
Playing as an individual, freshman Madelyn Young closed the day tied for 17th at +4 (76), including a pair of bridies of her own.
Junior Payton Bennett and freshman Jenna Estravillo, also playing as individuals, each carded a birdie as well, and are tied for 42nd at +7 (79) and tied for 62nd at +11 (83), respectively.
The final 18 holes of the Lady Jaguar Invitational begin tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. with another double tee start. Seven of Ball State's eight golfers will once again tee off from the opening hole starting with Estravillo at 9:15 a.m.
Young will be the lone Cardinals student-athlete teeing off from 10, with her day starting at 9:42 a.m.
