Cards Win Suspended Game, Fall in Series Finale at Jacksonville
March 03, 2024 | Baseball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ball State captured game two of a three-game series early Sunday evening while securing a 10-9 win over Jacksonville in a resumption of Saturday's suspended game, but dropped the nightcap in a 10-1 defeat at John Sessions Stadium.
The Cardinals took 2-of-3 in the series with the Dolphins to open a five-game road trip that includes games at Florida A&M in Tallahassee later this week.
"Our boys battled to win a series on the road against a quality opponent," said Cardinals coach Rich Maloney. "The come-from-behind victory in game two of the series was special. A lot of guys contributed to earn us the series win."
Leading 10-9 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning late Saturday, the second game of the series was suspended until Sunday afternoon. Then, with field conditions still poor, the resumption was delayed twice more until the series resumed shortly past 6 p.m., Sunday evening.
The Cardinals induced a groundout to quickly end the Jacksonville eighth, and neither team threatened in a scoreless ninth as Ball State took the opening games and threatened a series sweep.
Jacksonville had other ideas, though, and Ball State never mustered a challenge in the final game.
The Dolphins scratched out single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings before Ball State got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the sixth, with Hunter Dobbins scoring on Michael Gonzalez' sacrifice fly. But Jacksonville got a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-1 lead and the Dolphins plated three again in the bottom of the eighth.
The five-game Florida road trip continues at Florida A&M for another pair of games, Tuesday and Wednesday at 4 p.m., before returning to Muncie to open Mid-American Conference play on Friday vs. Eastern Michigan.
