
Track and Field Takes Second at Margaret Simmons Invite

MURRAY, Ky. -- Track and field had an exceptional weekend at Murray State's Margaret Simmons Invite on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23. In just their second outdoor meet of the season, the Cardinals secured a strong second place finish, collecting a total of 161 points. Â
The heptathlon was one of the Cardinal's first events of the weekend. Sophie Daugard, Amaya Hendrickson and Kendra Keesling all made their college debut in the hep as they represented Ball State through the two-day event. Â
The three multis athletes were strong competitors, all finishing within the overall top five. Keesling finished the event fourth overall (3862) and hit four new college-best marks. Her best mark, however, was in the long jump where she finished second with a jump of 5.30m. Â
Hendrickson was a consistent competitor in the heptathlon, remaining in the top three throughout all seven events. She also collected four new college-best marks, and two second place finishes in the 100m hurdles (15.75) and the shot put (11.14m). Her efforts were good for an overall finish of third place (4092). Â
Daugard secured the first-place finish, receiving a total of 4304 points. She also hit new college-best marks, her most impressive being in the 100m hurdles where she finished with a time of 16.13, three seconds better than the weekend prior. Â
The Cardinals found a lot of success both on the track and in the field. In jumping events, Mckenna Cinotte performed very well with a first-place finish in the triple jump (11.88m) and second in the long jump (5.37m). Â
Malina Miller also had a great competition with a first-place finish in the high jump (1.71m).Â
Ball State shined in the sprinting events as well. In the 100m, Makayla Sumrall took the first-place spot with a time of 11.78. Not far behind, Moriah Johnson finished second with a time of 12.06. Â
Alana Springer won the 200m, crossing the finish line with a time of 24.39. Jenna Oriani and Johnson were also top competitors in this event. Oriani finished 4th with a time of 24.75 and Johnson finished sixth with a new college-best time of 24.87. Â
The 4x100m relay was a strong event for the Cardinals with the team of Sumrall, Springer, Johnson, and Oriani finishing first with a combined time of 46.66. Â
In the 5000m run, Ella Fullmer secured the first-place spot with a huge personal-best time of 18:21.54. Â
Track and field will be back in action next weekend, March 28-30 as the team will represent at two meets, the Texas Relays and the Raleigh Relays. Â
