February 28, 2024 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (24-4, 13-2 MAC) returned to its winning ways after earning an impressive 75-41 win over Akron (9-17, 4-11 MAC) Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals' defensive game was strong from start to finish as Ball State held Akron to its lowest point total of the season.
After a somewhat slow start, the Cardinals were able to hold their own on defense to jump out to a quick 8-2 lead over the Zips in the opening minutes of the ball game. Later in the quarter, Ally Becki went on an 8-0 run in over a minute span that would give Ball State the 19-9 edge over Akron at the end of the first stanza.
A steal from Marie Kiefer and a layup from Nyla Hampton kept the Cardinals in cruise control at the seven-minute mark of the second quarter to push BSU's lead to 23-11. The Cardinals defense caused the Zips some fritz as Akron committed 16 turnovers in the first half while Ball State had only seven miscues. The Cardinals also shot 47 percent (14-30) from the field and Becki got her stroke back scoring 11 by the break. Ball State went on to take an impressive 37-19 advantage over Akron at intermission.
Ball State's defense did not let up in the third quarter which gave Akron no time for a comeback of any sorts. All-in-all neither team shot extremely well in the third, after a scoreless minute late in the frame, Annie Rauch completed an old fashioned 3-pointer with a layup and made free throw to put BSU up 48-23 at the 2:59 mark. The Cardinals went on to take the third frame from the Zips, 56-27.
The final quarter saw a lot of action from the Cardinals' bench. Ball State was able to stay the course on both offense and defense to end tonight's contest with a victory.
For the game, Richard led all players with 21 points while Becki finished the night with 19. Richard went 8-11 (.727) from the field while also pulling down six rebounds.
The Cardinals outscored the Zips 38-24 in the paint while scoring 38 points off Akron's 23 miscues.
The Ball State women's basketball team will wrap up its home portion of the regular season Saturday when it hosts Eastern Michigan at 11 am ET for Senior Day. The Cardinals will recognize seniors Estel Puiggros, Annie Rauch, and Sydney Shafer prior to tipoff.
